Work Packages

Work Package 1

Activity Type: Management Activity

Objectives of WP1:
* liaising with the EC throughout the project.
* ensure timely delivery of deliverables
* drive the organisation of technical aspects of the workshops
* co-ordinate relationship with external bodies
* develop internal/external communication systems
* organise and co-ordinate deliverables, meetings and workshops.

Work Package 2

Develop a database of fingerprint images
Activity Type: RTD/Innovation

Objectives of WP 2
* Define criteria and characteristics of data to be collected and a data collection process
* Build an appropriate reference database (s) for finger minutiae coding, testing and certification.
* Need multiple samples from same individuals as a base for evaluation
* Data collection must not be unique to any specific partner

Work Package 3

Define criteria for interoperability testing
Activity Type: RTD/Innovation

Objectives of WP 3
1.To define criteria for different levels of interoperability:
* basic interoperability of two data capture/signal processing subsystems with regard to a matching algorithm:
* performance-based interoperability of two data capture/signal processing subsystems w.r.t. a matching algorithm

2. To identify factors influencing minutiae template interoperability: Interoperability problems may be due to
* differences in the data capture component such as different sensors, different quality of acquired images etc.
* differences in the signal processing components: e.g. different skeleton and tangent methods in the feature extraction algorithms etc

3 To specify a test and certification protocol with regard to minutiae template interoperability

Work Package 4

Develop a test bed for fingerprint minutiae interoperability
Activity Type: RTD/Innovation

Objectives of WP 4
1. Create a test bed to automate the interoperability testing and certification process, defined by WP3.
2. Extend the existing COTS biometric testing toolkit, provided by Daon, to meet any additional special requirements of the interoperability process
3. Validate the test bed functionality using sample data with the integrated algorithms.
4. Deliver a documented and validated test bed, which will be employed to execute the test and certification processes in WP5.

Work Package 5

Incorporate an improvement step where interoperability of the tested systems can be improved
Activity Type: RTD/Innovation

Objectives of WP 5
Workpackage 5 provides leading edge research particularly with regard to the knowledge that will be gained as part of the collaborative research between Phase 1, 2 and 3 of this Workpackage.
Phase 1: Initial Test
Running the testbed. Process defined in WP3 (**) using system in WP4.
Phase 2: Improvement
Results of test shared with vendors for improvement (get performance numbers and dataset that was used.)
Phase 3: Retest
New biometric data combined with enhanced algorithms
The improvement between the phases is evaluated with the decreasing of performance lost of the two tests

Work Package 6

Provide for the testing of interoperability of future systems
Activity Type: RTD/Innovation

Objectives of WP 6
* To document for future tests and certification a fully validated process for interoperability testing and certification, to enable future testing for further fingerprint vendors.
* To provide a consolidated scientific report, documenting findings in respect of appropriate choice of database,
* To further standards for interoperability of biometric systems SC37
